Jaeggi sisters claim one-two at ISSF Junior World Cup

ISSF Junior World Cup Rifle / Pistol / Shotgun · Suhl, GER

Vivien Jaeggi won bragging rights at the dinner table today in the women's 50m rifle 3 positions final, defeating her younger sister Emely in a one-two for the family at the ISSF Junior World Cup in Suhl.

The Swiss sisters are amongst the rising stars in rifle, with Emely stealing many spotlights thanks to her ISSF World Cup bronze medal last season, which put her in contention for the Olympic team, but today was Vivien's day to shine, winning her first Junior World Cup title following a fantastic back-and-forth.

Setting the tone for the rest of the competition, both scored 153.3 on the kneeling and Vivien would lead her sister by 0.2 points following the kneeling. By this stage, they had overtaken the early prospects of Xu Yingliu of China and Katerina Mikulcikova of Czechia, who was one of three from her country in the final - joined by Barbora Dubska and Klaudie Katz.

Dubska would exit in sixth ahead of Anushka Thokur of India and 10m air rifle Olympic silver medallist Huang Yuting of China. Mikulcikova would be next to leave the competition, marginally behind Xu. At this same point, the Jaeggis had built a six-point lead over third-placed Katz. Emely had led since the start of the elimination stage and still had a gap when Katz was eliminated in fourth following a superb shot from Xu, who would take the bronze medal.

The turning point came when Vivien scored 10.4 to Emely's 10.0, meaning the sisters were tied with one shot to go. A 10.1 for Vivien would be enough as Emely again scored 10.0. The gold medal would go to the 19-year-old this time, as Emely took silver.
Romain Aufrere won the men's final in shocking circumstances
The men's final looked like a foregone conclusion until a dramatic last shot saw France's Romain Aufrere snatch the victory.

Aufrere had established a lead after the prone section, just ahead of Norway's Jen Oestli, with the two most-experienced athletes - pushing five points ahead of the chasing pack. But by the start of the elimination, the momentum had moved towards Oestli, who had a 1.9-point lead.

Oestli continued to increase his lead and heading into the final shot, the deficit was 3.3 points. The final shot was a combination of excellence from the Frenchman and a costly mistake from the Norwegian. Aufrere scored 10.6, but shockingly, Oestli could only muster a mark of 6.7, meaning the lead was completely eradicated. Aufrere finished on 459.7 and Oestli on 459.1.

India's Adriyan Karmakar took the bronze, after a close battle with Jesper Johansson of Sweden and Su Wenxi of China. Completing the field were Ukraine's Danylo Hrynyk, Griffin Lake of the United States and Croatia's Darko Tomasevic.
