1st Junior Championship of the Americas Rifle/Pistol · Asuncion, PAR

The competition was held over four days of finals in Asuncion, Paraguay.

The first-ever Junior Championship of the Americas Rifle/Pistol has been held in Asuncion, Paraguay, bringing together the best rising stars from across North and South America.

Showing the depth across the continent, there were five countries to win gold medals across six events.

In the 10m air rifle finals, men's and women's titles went the way of Argentina's Bruno Alvarez and Chile's Allison Aguilera.

Alvarez's composure secured him the men's gold with a score of 245.9, with Grayson Muller of the United States finishing runner-up on 244.3, after losing touch in the final shots of the elimination stage. It was heartbreak for Jose Alvarado of Mexico, who had led, but dropped to third due to some costly errors.

Aguilera thrived in the elimination stage on her way to gold, overcoming her greatest threats from Argentina, coming from Maria Oblan and Aylen Miguel. Aside from a blip of 9.4, she excelled right through to her final shots, while the compatriots fought for silver. In the end, Aguilera scored 245.9 to Oblan's 244.0, while Miguel took bronze.

Mixed team gold went to Carmen Tiul and Jose Piedrasanta of Guatemala by a fine 16-14 margin over Americans Gracie Dinh and Tyler Wee. Completing the podium were Mexicans Luisa Marquez and Jose Alvarado, winning by the same score over Emily Yang and Rex Liu of Canada.

Mexico claimed several medals in Asuncion
American Nathan Lim and Mexico's Mia Rosales won the men's and women's 10m pistol gold medals.

Lim was the leader in the men's final from start to finish, impressively holding a lead over Chile's Jose Aguillera and Mexico's Luis Dimas. He built up such a commanding lead, that creeping errors did not lose him his lead.

Rosales led a one-two for her nation, holding her nerve to defeat Sofia Ibarra after the pair traded the lead right up until the latter stages of the competition. Ana da Silva from Brazil was the bronze medallists.

Mixed team pistol gold was claimed by Americans Suman Sanghera and Marcus Klemp, defeating Guatemala's Maryorith Rivas and Jonathan Caal 16-14. A more resounding win saw Sofia Ibarra enact some form of revenge against teammate Mia Rosales, as she and partner Anthony Tabares defeated their fellow Mexicans Rosales and Luis Dimas 16-6 for the bronze.
